Main facts
A Delhi to Agra day trip is sold on the Taj Mahal, but the best versions of the day add more monuments to it. The featured listing's itinerary has the Taj Mahal with a guide for 3 hours, Agra Fort with a guide for 1 hour and the Baby Taj with a guide for 1 hour. The first reason to take the full day is variety: a white marble tomb, a red sandstone fortress and a small jeweled mausoleum feel like different places, and they are all in one city.
The second reason is context. The Fort is where the Mughal emperors ruled from, and Incredible India says it was a royal residence for generations of the dynasty.5 Seeing it explains why the Taj Mahal sits where it does, on the same river, at a short distance from the seat of power. The third reason is the view: the tourism department says the balconies of the pavilions in the fort give views of the Yamuna and the Taj Mahal.6
The final reason is practical. The monuments are close, and the Fort stands about 2.5 kilometres from the Taj Mahal, so adding them costs little driving once you are in Agra.7 The road from Delhi is the expensive part of the day, at 204 km, and the Fort and the Baby Taj make better use of it than a single stop would.8 The rest of this page tells you what each monument offers, what it costs and when it is open.
The monuments compared
| Monument | Listed time | Hours say | Foreign fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taj Mahal | 3 hours | Closed Fridays3 | Rs 110013 |
| Agra Fort | 1 hour | 06:00 AM to 06:00 PM14 | Rs 6501 |
| Baby Taj | 1 hour | 06:00 AM to 06:00 PM15 | Rs 3102 |
Fees are weekday amounts in rupees from the tourism department; hours are Incredible India's, and the department gives sunrise to sunset.4
Incredible India calls Agra Fort the first grand citadel of the Mughals and says it sits beside the Yamuna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the seat of power for Mughal emperors.7,9 It is also called the Red Fort for its sandstone walls. Its buildings reflect the taste of the rulers who lived there: Akbar's buildings, Shah Jahan's white marble replacements for some of them and the later additions that Incredible India describes.5
Several spots repay the visit. The Khas Mahal has lattice windows with views of the Taj Mahal across the river, and the Musamman Burj, believed to be where Shah Jahan was confined until his death, also offers views of the Taj Mahal.10,11 The Sheesh Mahal has mirrorwork on its walls and ceiling and used to be the dressing room for royal ladies.12 A guide explains these in order, which is what the listing's guided hour is for.
One hour is a short visit to a place this size, and a guide earns the time by choosing a route. On the featured listing the Fort comes after the Taj Mahal and before lunch, so you arrive with the morning's energy and leave with an appetite. If you love architecture and history, tell your guide at the start and ask to shorten the Baby Taj instead. The listing's hour is a plan, and a private guide can bend it.
Agra Fort entry
Weekday fees except Friday in rupees, as the tourism department's table lists them.1
Official pages differ on the hours of Agra Fort, so both are given here. Incredible India lists an opening time of 06:00 AM and a closing time of 06:00 PM.14 The tourism department says all other monuments and tourist attractions in Agra, meaning those other than the Taj Mahal, are open throughout the week from sunrise to sunset.4 Check the current hours before you go, since the sources are not identical.
The fee is set by the tourism department's table. For a foreign visitor, Agra Fort costs Rs 650 on weekdays except Friday and Rs 600 on Friday or after visiting the Taj Mahal.1 The same table lists Rs 50 for an Indian citizen on weekdays and Rs 90 for a citizen of SAARC or BIMSTEC countries.1 A package that includes tickets pays these for you, and one that leaves them out passes them to you, as the packages guide here explains.
The Taj Mahal itself is closed on Fridays, which makes the Fort a good Friday choice. The tourism department says the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general viewing and that the other Agra monuments stay open all week.3,4 On a Friday the day would run around the Fort and the Baby Taj, with the Taj Mahal admired from outside. Ask the operator how a Friday booking is handled before you reserve.

The mausoleum
Book the full dayItimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb is often called the Baby Taj, and Incredible India says it dates back to before the Taj Mahal was completed.21 The tomb was built by Nur Jahan as a memorial to her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg, who was chief minister of Emperor Jahangir.16 It is one of the first Mughal structures built of white marble instead of red sandstone, which is the reason people compare it with the larger monument.19
What you see are surfaces. The walls are white marble from Rajasthan set with semi-precious stones such as cornelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx and topaz, and light enters through carved marble jali screens.18 The inlay work, lattice screens and carvings have earned it the nickname Jewel Box.17 It is smaller and quieter than the Fort, so a guided hour is enough, and the listing allots exactly that.
Incredible India gives the tomb an opening time of 06:00 AM and a closing time of 06:00 PM, while the tourism department's fee table lists Rs 310 for a foreign visitor and Rs 30 for an Indian citizen on weekdays except Friday.15,2 The sources differ here too, one giving clock times and the other sunrise to sunset for the city's other monuments.4 If you are close to the end of your day, the Baby Taj is the stop that suffers least from a late arrival, since a small tomb can be seen in outline in a short time.
After the Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal
The guided visit comes first on the itinerary.
Agra Fort
A guided hour, at a fort about 2.5 kilometres from the Taj Mahal.7
Lunch
The itinerary lists a lunch stop of 1 hour in Agra.
Baby Taj
The last guided stop is the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah.
The ride home
The itinerary ends with a car leg of 3.5 hours.
The listing's order is the Taj Mahal first, then Agra Fort, then lunch, then the Baby Taj, with a car leg of 3.5 hours at each end. That order front-loads the longest visit and puts a meal between the smaller stops. Another private Viator tour makes the trade explicit, saying that the visitor can see either Agra Fort or the Baby Taj after the Taj Mahal and lunch, which is the first thing to ask about any itinerary.
Time is the constraint. The listing notes that a start after 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM cannot guarantee that every site is covered, although the Taj Mahal is assured. The Fort and the Baby Taj are therefore the stops at risk on a late day. That is worth knowing when you choose a pickup time, because the cost of sleeping in shows up in the afternoon rather than the morning, and the Taj Mahal itself is never the stop you lose. A start at 7:00 AM or later, recommended in December and January because of morning fog, still leaves room for every stop if the road is clear.
If you must choose between the smaller stops, choose by interest. The Fort rewards history and river views, and the Baby Taj rewards close-up craft in marble and inlay. A guide can show you both in outline in the time of one. Whatever you choose, keep your photo ID with you, since the tourism department says every tourist must carry an identity proof, and enjoy the Taj Mahal first on the list.20

being one of the first Mughal structures constructed with white marble instead of traditional red sandstone structures.
A sunrise day changes the order of the afternoon. The listing says the 2:30 AM pickup turns the day into a sunrise tour, with breakfast at a hotel in place of lunch. The Taj Mahal is the first stop either way, so the Fort and the Baby Taj move earlier on the clock, and you reach them with a long morning behind you. Ask the guide to keep the Fort walk to the highlights if the early start leaves you tired, and save the Baby Taj for the calm end of the day.
A Friday day is a different plan altogether. The listing warns that the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, and the tourism department confirms the closure for general viewing.3 The Fort and the Baby Taj stay open through the week, so a Friday visit can still fill a day.4 It will be a smaller day than the usual one, and some travelers prefer to shift the whole trip to another weekday instead of building a day without the monument they came to see.
A slow day suits travelers with children or older relatives. The featured listing is wheelchair accessible, and the tourism department says a wheelchair and a first aid box are available at the ASI office.22 The Fort has long ramps and courtyards, so pace yourself and ask the guide where to sit. A private car can wait while you rest, which a shared departure cannot do, and that is often the real reason families choose the private format for this route.
