Main facts
The first question is the distance, and the official answers do not match to the kilometer. The tourism department's road chart lists Delhi at 204 km from Agra, while the expressway authority's overview says Agra is about 210 km from Delhi by road.1,2 Neither figure is measured from the airport door. Treat both as the distance between the cities and expect the exact number to depend on your terminal, your route and the day.
How far the Taj Mahal is from Delhi airport, in practice, is better measured in hours than in kilometers. The day listing on this site puts the Delhi to Agra drive at approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic, and its itinerary lists 3.5 hours in the car each way. Read those figures as a range for planning and not as a promise, since traffic in the capital decides the first stretch of the trip.
If you want a rule of thumb, plan the airport leg as most of a day of travel in total, split between going and coming back. The monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and it is shut on Fridays.5,4 Those hours, not the kilometers, set the shape of an arrival or layover day, because the drive must end before the gates do.
Ways to reach Agra
| Option | What the source says | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi or app cab | Prepaid taxis and app cabs wait outside6 | You land with no booking |
| Private day trip | Pickup in the Airport Area is an option | You want the sights and a driver |
| One-way transfer | The driver meets arrivals at T3 | You only need the ride |
| Metro to the city | About 25 minutes to T3 from the station10 | You stay in Delhi first |
| Flight to Agra | Agra Airport (AGR) is listed12 | Your trip ends in Agra |
Each row restates what the airport, the tourism board or the listing says; fares are not shown, because they change by the day and by the route.
Most traffic between Delhi and Agra uses the Yamuna Expressway. The authority that runs the area says it stretches 165 km, connects Delhi and Agra and has 6 lanes, extendable to 8, with controlled access.7 Controlled access means a road without side junctions, which is why it feels different from an ordinary highway and why a driver can hold a steady pace on a clear day.
The authority also says the project was conceived to cut travel time between Noida and Agra to just 100 minutes.9 That is a design aim on a stretch that starts beyond the airport, so it is not a promise for your whole journey. Add the ride from the terminal to the expressway, and add the weight of the morning traffic, and the day listing's range of 3 to 4 hours is the safer guide.
Fog is the winter factor. The day listing recommends a start at 7:00 AM or later from December to January because of morning fog, and a later start leaves less margin for the sights. On a layover, that matters twice: a foggy morning delays the road, and a late finish pushes your return toward the evening when you need to be at the airport. Build slack into any winter plan and keep an eye on your airline's messages.
The clock, in minutes
Delhi Airport says passengers at terminals T1, T2 and T3 have 24/7 cab options right outside the arrival gates.3 Its own page lists prepaid and fixed-rate taxis, app-based cabs and car rentals.6 That makes a same-day ride to Agra possible without any booking, and it is how a Taj Mahal tour from Delhi airport can begin on the spot, though a negotiated fare for a trip of this length is a conversation to have before you sit in the car.
The Airport Express metro line serves Terminal 3, and the airport says it takes around 25 minutes from New Delhi Railway Station.10 That is useful if your hotel or your train is in the city, but it is a city link and not a route to Agra. For Agra itself you still need a car, a bus or a train from the city, so the metro helps only with the first leg.
The simplest arrival is a pickup arranged in advance. The private day trip on this site lists 4 pickup location options, Chanakyapuri, Gurugram, the Airport Area and Mahipalpur, with the same 4 drop-off locations. A one-way private transfer is another route, and its listing says the driver meets airport arrivals at Terminal 3, Pillar No. 14. Check which terminal you land at before you choose a meeting point.

Meets you at Terminal 3
The day listing sets an 8 to 11 hour duration, with 3 hours at the Taj Mahal, 1 hour at Agra Fort, 1 hour for lunch and 1 hour at the Baby Taj, and 3.5 hours of driving each way. That is a full day, and it only suits a layover that is long enough to hold it. If you land in the evening, or leave in the morning, the sensible answer is a different day of your trip.
The listing also covers early arrivals. A 2:30 AM pickup turns the day into a sunrise visit with breakfast in place of lunch, and a tour that starts after 09:00 or 10:00 AM cannot promise every site, though the Taj Mahal is assured. For someone landing at night, a sunrise pickup straight from the Airport Area may be the cleanest fit, since it saves a hotel stop. Ask the operator whether that works for your arrival time.
Friday needs its own plan. The listing says the Taj Mahal is closed on every Friday, and the tourism department says the same.4 If your layover falls on that day, use it for Agra Fort, which keeps sunrise-to-sunset hours every day, or move the Taj to another date.13 Do not book a Taj-focused day on a Friday and hope for the best.

Heading back
International web check-in ends 75 minutes before departure.8
The return is the part to protect. Delhi Airport says international flights allow web check-in from 24 hours to 75 minutes before departure, and domestic flights between 48 hours and 60 minutes before departure.8,11 Those windows are for web check-in, not for the whole airport process, so do not read them as the time you may arrive. They do show how soon before the flight the airline's own clock starts to bite.
Count backward from the departure time. Start with the check-in window, then add the immigration and security queues, then add the road from the expressway to the terminal and the weight of evening traffic. Whatever sum you reach, add a margin on top of it, because the drive from Agra can run longer than the listing's 3 to 4 hours.
Carry your documents on the day trip. Delhi Airport says international passengers need a valid passport, and it asks domestic passengers to carry an accepted photo ID.22 Keep them in a small bag that stays with you, not in luggage left in the car. If you have heavy bags, ask the operator in advance whether they ride along; a Taj visit with a suitcase is a hassle, and the cloak rooms at the gates do not change that.23

passengers at all terminals (T1, T2, and T3) have access to 24/7 cab options right outside the arrival gates
Agra has an airport of its own. Incredible India lists Agra Airport (AGR) and Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) as the nearest airports to the Taj Mahal, and the tourism department says Agra's airport is around 7 km from the city center.12,24 Whether a flight to Agra suits you depends on the schedule on the day. It is worth a search if your trip ends in Agra.
A second airport is described nearby. The expressway authority's project page speaks of a greenfield airport at Jewar, 700 meters from the Yamuna Expressway.25 Check which airport your ticket actually names before you plan the ride, because a transfer that starts at the wrong terminal wastes the one thing a layover lacks: time.
The last option is to skip the airport leg altogether. A hotel night in Delhi and a morning pickup from the city is the least stressful way for many trips, and the same listing offers pickup in Chanakyapuri and Gurugram. Use the decision guide below to weigh the options against your own flight times.
