Fatehpur Sikri is a third UNESCO site beside the Taj and the Fort. The sums of a long day decide whether it belongs in your plan.

Main facts
Fatehpur Sikri is not part of the Taj Mahal complex and not inside Agra. The tourism department puts it about 39 km from Agra city, which means the distance counts from the city and not from the Taj gate.1 Incredible India calls it a short drive from Agra and another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the same page says Agra is the only Indian city with three UNESCO sites: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.4,5
That makes the add-on a real detour and not a roadside stop. If your day starts in Delhi, you drive to Agra, see the monuments there and then decide whether the extra ride out and back is worth the hours it uses. The trip from Delhi to Agra and Fatehpur Sikri in one day is possible on paper, but it asks more of the clock than the standard Taj day does, and the clock is already full.
Travelers who plan a visit like this usually want to tick off every heritage site at once. It helps to separate the wish from the plan. The sites are close enough to share a trip, yet each one has its own opening rule, its own ticket and its own pace. The sections below put those pieces side by side so you can judge the fit before you pay for anything.
The four sites
| Site | Where | Opening rule | Foreign fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taj Mahal | Agra city | Closed on Fridays3 | Rs 110015 |
| Agra Fort | Agra city | Sunrise to sunset daily7 | Rs 65016 |
| Baby Taj | Agra city | Fee chart has a Friday column17 | Rs 31017 |
| Fatehpur Sikri | About 39 km out1 | Sunrise to sunset daily1 | Rs 6102 |
Fees are the weekday figures for foreigners and NRIs from the tourism department's ticket chart; Indian visitors pay far less. Check the current chart before you go.
Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri during 1564, according to the tourism department, and Incredible India says it served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585.9,10 Incredible India also calls it the first planned city of the Mughals.11 So you are visiting a capital that was designed, used and left within a single reign, and the layout still shows the thinking.
The tourism department says Akbar later had to abandon the city because of a shortage of water and unrest in the north-west.12 That short life explains the feel of the place. Courtyards and halls stand in clean red sandstone with few signs of daily use, and the quiet is a contrast with the busy Taj gates. Plan to walk, because the complex is a set of courtyards and terraces, and wear shoes that cope with hot stone.
The official list of renowned places names Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khaas, Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal, Jodha Bai's Palace and Birbal Bhavan.13 Incredible India singles out the Buland Darwaza as a grand entrance decorated with verses from the Quran.14 If you only have energy for one thing there, make it the great gate and the courtyard behind it, and treat the palace rooms as a bonus.
The private day trip on this site is a car journey with a live guide, and its itinerary lists 3.5 hours of driving each way, 3 hours at the Taj Mahal, 1 hour at Agra Fort, 1 hour for lunch at a 5-star hotel and 1 hour at the Baby Taj. The headline duration is 8 to 11 hours. Fatehpur Sikri does not appear among those stops, so do not count on it unless the operator confirms it in writing.
The listing also warns that a tour starting after 09:00 or 10:00 AM cannot promise every site, though the Taj Mahal itself is assured. That one line tells you how tight the schedule is. A late start already squeezes the Fort and the Baby Taj, so a detour for Fatehpur Sikri on top would crowd out something else. If the Taj is your priority, protect it and leave the extra stop for another day.
A second private listing, with a hotel meal at its center, runs 5 to 11 hours and its itinerary shows the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort with a meal in between. It is another shape of the same day, and it does not name Fatehpur Sikri either. For a trip that does, look at the 2 day listing from Delhi, whose highlights name the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri next to the Taj, the Fort and the Baby Taj.
Three ways to shape the trip

No Fatehpur
Taj, Fort and Baby Taj

Private
A shorter, flexible day

2 days
Names Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is open from sunrise to sunset every day, and the Taj Mahal is open from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset.1,6 Both end with the light, so a detour that leaves Agra in the afternoon has a hard edge. Whatever you plan, check the sunset time for your travel month and work backward from it, then add the time for the road back to Agra and on to the capital. A late finish at Fatehpur Sikri means a late return, and it is better to know that before the driver does.
Friday changes the picture. The monument is closed on Fridays, while Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort keep their sunrise-to-sunset hours.3,1,7 The ticket chart even has a Friday column for both sites, which fits their daily opening.2,16 A Friday in Agra is therefore a good day for the add-on, with the Taj moved to the day before or after.
Winter adds one more factor. The day listing recommends a start at 7:00 AM or later from December to January because of morning fog, and it gives the Delhi to Agra drive as approximately 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. A foggy start eats into a day that is already full. This is the clearest reason to think about sleeping in Agra if Fatehpur Sikri matters to you.
A two-day shape
First day, early
The monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise, and the day listing assigns 3 hours to it.6
First day, midday
The Fort is open from sunrise to sunset, and the day listing gives it 1 hour.7
First day, afternoon
The Baby Taj is the first Mughal structure built entirely of marble, and the listing gives it 1 hour.8
Evening
The 2 day listing from Delhi makes room for a night in Agra.
Second day
The site is open from sunrise to sunset, about 39 km from Agra city.1
The ticket chart on the tourism department's site lists the Taj Mahal at Rs 1100 for foreign visitors and Rs 50 for Indian visitors, plus an optional Rs 200 for the main mausoleum.15,29 Agra Fort is listed at Rs 650 for foreigners and NRIs on weekdays except Friday.16 Fatehpur Sikri is listed at Rs 610 for the same group, and Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj, at Rs 310.2,17
There is a small saving worth knowing. The chart carries a column for visits after the Taj, and it lists Rs 600 for foreigners at both Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri in that column and on Fridays.16,2 Children below 15 do not pay an entry fee.28 Fees change, so treat these figures as a guide and check the current chart or the ticket counter before you budget.
None of this is the price of the tour. A guided listing has its own fare, and the site shows it as a from price on the booking button. What the chart gives you is the cost of each gate if you walk in on your own, which helps you judge what a combined plan adds. Adding Fatehpur Sikri adds a gate fee on top of the fares for the car and the time, and that sum is the honest cost of the extra stop. Compare it with what the same hours would give you at the Taj or the Fort before you commit.

Buland Darwaza stands as an impressive grand entrance decorated with verses from the Holy Quran providing insight into early Mughal design.
Before you decide
The cleanest answer is to sleep in Agra. A 2 day tour from Delhi by car puts the Taj, the Fort, the Baby Taj and Fatehpur Sikri on a schedule with a night in between, and it is wheelchair accessible. Spreading the sites over a longer stay also lets you use the Friday rule: put Fatehpur Sikri on the day when the Taj is shut. You also get to arrive at the Taj fresh, which matters for a visit that is meant to be the highlight of the trip.
If you are set on a one day trip to Agra and Fatehpur Sikri from Delhi, keep the plan honest. Do the Taj Mahal first, because the monument has the shortest window, then Agra Fort, and only then ask yourself whether the afternoon has room for the extra ride. If the light is fading or the road back is long, let the add-on go without regret. Public buses run from the ISBT and Idgah stands in Agra to Fatehpur Sikri, which is a budget option for independent travelers who add it on their own.18
A third path is to treat it as a separate trip from Agra. The tourism department's road chart lists Delhi at 204 km from Agra, so Fatehpur Sikri belongs to the Agra end of the journey and not the Delhi end.22 Come back for it on a second visit, or let it be the reason you extend. Either way the Taj day on this site stays clean, with no compromises on the monument you came for.
